So, if you feel something creeping up your neck, don't crush it just yet: it might be your next winning play! They're not just throwaway creature slots, though, as they can hide a few chitinous gems among their ranks. But also puny and expendable, which is maybe the reason why they're not so popular in the world of the Magic tribes. Insects are also typically seen as gross, disgusting, and scary, especially when they grow too much. ![]() That's not surprising, since, like Wikipedia teaches us, the Insects are "among the most diverse groups of animals on the planet", and represent "more than half of all known living organisms". ![]() New Insects are printed pretty much in every block, and will certainly keep coming. ![]() Over the years, the imagination of the Magic designers has come up with 133 different creatures that today go under the Insect moniker, representing a large range of arthropods of all forms, sizes, and purposes (the phylum is also covered by their cousins the Spiders, as brilliantly reported by Adam_the_Mentat in his recent article). Since Legends' Carrion Ants, Emerald Dragonfly and Killer Bees, the very first Insects in the game (although Ice Age's Flow of Maggots and Yavimaya Gnats are actually the first creatures to have the word "Insect" in the type line, before the older ones would be re-categorized during the Grand Creature Type Update in 2007, along with the legendary Legend Xira Arien), Magic has featured all kinds of crawling and swarming little critters, especially in green and black, as those three precursors already prove: real life insects happily dwell into forests and swamps, after all. Insect: one of the largest yet least considered tribes in Magic: The Gathering. ![]()
